Maridalen (TON1)

Text: Bjørn Opdahl

Starting Point

There are several alternative starting points to get to the Maridalen from E10 on Herjangsfjellet. There are marked trails from Skallvannet and Trollhøgda. You can also park elsewhere between these places and enter the preset skitracks. Check the track here

Directions

From Bjerkvik follow the E10 towards Harstad about 9 km to Trollhøgda and about 11 km to Skallvann.

From the roundabout on the western side of Tjeldsundbrua there are about 48 km to Skallvann and 51 km to Trollhøgda.

At Trollhøgda there is a parking lot, at Easter, with parking fee (30 kr per day (2017)). There are free parking spaces on both sides of the E10 at Trollhøgda, and a larger parking lot at Skallvann.

Tour description

The route from Skallvann is a lot shorter (about 4 km) than that from Trollhøgda. The first half of the trail from Trollhøgda is almost flat. The increase on the rest of the trail is moderate. When you arrive at Bonåsen you can choose to go right or left (the trail goes around Bonåsen). The left trail is a bit longer and the trail from Skallvannet enters this trail. This also has a steady increasing terrain.
The slope to the right varies slightly in height. On the north side of Bonåsen, take the trail up to and into the Maridalen.

The trails are well marked with large signs.

Highlights of the Trip

The trip itself is relatively easy with moderate increase. It is a popular cottage area, and there are a lot of cabins in the area especially around Båtvatnet. There are several places you have a great view of Bjørnfjell. The Maridalen is also a great sight, especially when the sun is shining.

Difficulty and Time Usage

The trip is relatively easy. The route from Trollhøgda to Maridalen is approximately 10 km. The route from Skallvannet is about 6 km.
