When there is no snow (spring, summer and autumn) you can drive past the parking lot at Aunfjellet (Map reference: Parking Main road), and after about 150 m turn left onto a pathway. At the end of this road you can park. You can see this parking lot from the main road (Map reference: Parking summer). In winter, you park in the parking lot at the road that cross the mountain. See the map.
Follow road 83 out of Harstad center towards Borkenes. Drive straight ahead at the roundabout at Samamoa (Shell Station) and follow road 867 to Ervika. In Ervika you drive straight ahead and onto Road 1 towards Nupen and Borkenes. At Høgda (highest point before descending to Kasfjord), turn right onto road 2 towards Aun. The first parking lot is located at the first water you meet on Aunfjellet.
Just after the start you go over a marsh that can be quite damp, but quite possible to walk on. The path up to Keipen Nord is very clear. The trail to Keipenvannet is also clear, but is a more traditional path. There are several nice paths along the top of the mountain between Keipvannet and Keipen Nord.
Early in the winter it may be possible to walk on your feet to Keipen. But otherwise you have to use skis or snowshoes in winter.
One has a nice view all the way while walking up the mountain. But when you reach the top you have a fabulous view of the Kasfjord which is about 500 m right below you. And over the sea you can see Vesterålen in the west with Andenes to the north. To the north lies Grytøya with the impressive mountain range that is reflected in Toppsundet which runs between Grytøya and Hinnøya. To the northeast you see Senja and Dyrøya on the other side of Vågsfjorden. And to the east you see Andorja and Rolla with the mainland behind.
This is a great trip for the family. Most people manage to go this trip. There are no difficult parties. It can be a little wet in the path and on the swamp in the beginning. The trip from the parking lot to Keipen Nord or Keipvannet takes about 30-45 min one way.
